Is Anxiety a Lack of Faith?
When Jesus was probably in the most anxious and stressful time of His life, He prayed. It’s interesting and powerful to realize that Jesus felt the need to talk with His Father just like you and I fall to our knees when we face situations too heavy to carry alone.
While in the Garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26:36-46), Jesus asked three times if there was another way, could this cup pass from Him, all the while knowing that He chose to be the perfect, substitutionary sacrifice for mankind. Even choosing and knowing, He prayed for help.
So was Jesus’ anxiety a lack of faith?
I don’t believe anxiety is always a sign of our lacking faith. I believe it is often the prompting we need to remind us of our inadequacy and propel us toward Someone with the power to meet our needs and calm our fears. We need a Savior. We need Jesus.
When our lives are spinning faster than that old tilt-a-whirl we used to ride at the fair, Scripture is that seat belt we depend on to hold us tight.
Because David used his pen to pour out his heart during difficult times — times when fear overwhelmed him — we have his words for comfort in the psalms he wrote.
Kristine and I discussed our go-to psalms for calming our hearts on an episode of the Your Hope Coach podcast. We picked three, but y’all, we could have picked so many more.
Feeling anxious is not always a lack of faith. Let’s accept it as the prompting we need to seek tools to help calm our hearts.
