Count Your Blessings, Name Them One by One
Many times when this song was sung at my church, we would pause between verses and allow people to count their blessings. To testify (share) what God was doing in their lives.
When upon life’s billows you are tempest-tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,
And you will be singing as the days go by.When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold.
Count your many blessings, money cannot buy
Your reward in heaven, nor your Lord on high.So amid the conflict, whether great or small,
Do not be discouraged, God is overall;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.” — Johnson Oatman, Jr
As you read these verses, what is your testimony of God’s provision in your life?
Happy Thanksgiving!
Thank you for this beautiful reminder. I remembered the women at church singing this. I was a child and I wondered what blessings they could be singing about. They were poor, overworked and there didn’t seem to be a bright future for them. Their wrinkled and worn hands would be lifted to God. The memory is beautiful. Hugs
Beautiful memory, Sherry. Thank you for sharing. I feel blessed to have grown up in a time when the hymns were sung. I love music today, but I also love those old hymns. They comfort my soul. Hugs right back, friend.
