How to Find God in Chaos

It is H.O.T.! I am a born and bred Louisianian and a heat index of 110 still catches me by surprise.

I’m thinkin’ we need to adopt the afternoon siesta like my Mamaw D insisted on. Every afternoon after lunch, we all “laid down”, watched her “stories” (soap operas), and rested. Papaw D even settled down in his chair. Now, he liked to aggravate Mamaw with all his “messin’ and a gommin”, but y’all, he knew better. We were all quiet while watching As the World Turns and The Guiding Light

Life on a soap is constant chaos. Sometimes our lives feel like that too. Y’all know by now how much I appreciate David’s writings in the Psalms. It proves that nothing is new under the sun (Ecclesiastes 1:9). His struggles are our struggles. David mentors his readers with practical ways to keep the proper perspective on difficulties. He encourages himself with the truth of his own experience. Y’all, we can do that.

8 I know the Lord is always with me.
I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.
9 No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice.
    My body rests in safety.
10 For you will not leave my soul among the dead
or allow your holy one to rot in the grave.
11 You will show me the way of life,
granting me the joy of your presence
and the pleasures of living with you forever.
Psalm 16:8-11

When you get discombobulated over what’s happening in your life or in this world (Lord Jesus, help us), one of your first questions should be, “OK. What do I know? Not what I think I know, but what do I know? What is the truth?”

Even when chaos is all around us (and sometimes in us) and we are shaking in our boots, let’s declare David’s words over our life “I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.”

In this month’s solo podcast, I discuss Gideon. That fella was shaking in his boots. Talk about chaos. Please take the time to read his story in Judges 6-8. Here’s his big question to God, “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, ‘but if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our ancestors told us about when they said, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up out of Egypt?’”

Now God told Gideon why all this was happening to the Israelites, and sometimes we know, and other times we can’t figure it out. I invite you to continue this conversation about Gideon’s big question on your favorite podcast player or by clicking the link below.
